Playful–Accepting–Curious–Empathic

PACE is more than just a model of care; it’s our way of “being” and the golden fiber woven throughout KidsTLC’s campus that guides our interactions with our clients and each other! Read the latest issue of our Inside Scoop to hear how PACE is used daily on our campus.

To write to you is an honor. I am eager to share the power that lies within KidsTLC’s PACE model of care with children in our residential treatment program who have experienced trauma. Many times in life, we are met with moments that alter who we are. These moments resonate with our core self and push us to discover not only who we currently are, but who we want to be.

I am proud to be a part of a vision that focuses on helping children and families discover their potential through connection and healing.

If I were to think of a story to tell about my time working in KidsTLC’s Phoenix program, it would honestly be hard to choose. There have been many moments here that have challenged me and changed my outlook on the world; including how I fit in it. So today I want to share with you about the vivacious Stars Unit as a whole – the youngest group of kids living on our campus, ranging in age from six to nine years old.

We lovingly refer to these kids as our “Stareos” or “Monstars.” Despite all they have experienced in their lifetime, they remain ready to play at a moment’s notice. The staff that build and maintain a safe haven for these kids are also held to that standard. The standard of being flexible, playful and curious about the imagination and thought process behind the eyes of a child who may be screaming for our attention as they search for the words to tell us they want to play a game. They want to connect. They want a new experience of interacting with an adult that they are learning to trust. We know that “play” is the language of the child, and through play we can help them feel safe.

I am inspired by the resilience of our kids and the unconditional, dedicated care delivered by our staff. We, as adults, hold so much power in our ability to notice those around us and connect with them. This is key on the Stars Unit. We are a versatile home that acknowledges the life that our children led before coming into our care. A life of missed opportunities to just be kids – to play dinosaurs or LEGOS. Our staff transform that experience into daily games of Candy Land and The Floor is Lava. We make “knock-knock” jokes that instill confidence with social skills, and have pajama days that reaffirm each human’s need for rest and comfort. We tell bedtime stories and provide nightlights with an apple before bed. The Stars Unit has shown me the transformation that takes place when there is unwavering support and nourishment.

My fondest thoughts are of greeting kids and their families, and waving goodbye when they have made PACE part of how they interact in their home. It has stirred a passion in me to let the world know there is power in PLAY, because it shows that we are the same. There is power in ACCEPTANCE, because it validates our opportunity to exist. There is power in CURIOSITY because it allows the mind to stretch and move as we feel heard. EMPATHY holds us together. It is the glue that says “I understand that you are where you are, and I will wait with you there.” All of these together help us to discover the unique soul that lies within each individual.

Thank you for being a part of KidsTLC’s healing community. I have seen first-hand how your support is providing little moments of laughs, tears, and uncovered emotions as our children find trust and connection. I truly believe that together, we are not only healing the world, but also helping to restore it.

Sincerely, Karis Pruitt
