Thriving Families (formerly known as SOS)

In our complicated society, finding help for life’s challenges is grueling. KidsTLC’s Thriving Families program is available to offer assistance in navigating the complexities of finding mental health care and daily living support. Children and families facing daunting problems like family division, homelessness, mental health struggles cannot manage this journey alone. Thriving Families exists to join with those having such difficulties by providing a navigator who can connect them with KidsTLC’ s array of mental health services as well as an array of community services and partnerships that can assist with other basic needs also. Familias Prosperando provides navigation services designed for the unique needs of our Spanish Speaking community.

Thriving Families also partners with several local school districts, including Olathe and Shawnee Mission, to better serve students qualifying for McKinney-Vento* services. Families and individuals are referred to monthly collaborative meetings, through initiatives such as Impact Olathe and Project Home, that provide a range of support services including housing, employment, finances, mental health and more.
*The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was the first- and remains the only- major federal legislative response to homelessness. The program is designed to address the problems that homeless children face in enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school.

The Issue Locally

Over 7,000 homeless students have been identified in the Kansas City Metropolitan area and at least 2,500 of those students are youth. Since 2008 poverty has steadily grown across the metro area and since 2000, Johnson County Kansas’ poverty rate has nearly doubled.
