This week I want to give a shout to the Olathe Fire Department! With all the tragedies and challenges facing those in public service right now, generous and passionate members of the Olathe Fire Department showed our kids the true meaning of public service. Unfortunately, for some of our kids, involvement of police and fire personnel has come during some of the most difficult and painful times in their lives. Yesterday’s activities provided an opportunity to change that perspective and create new memories. The big shiny fire truck pulled onto our campus, kids filed out into the parking lot and in no time at all it was all hands on deck for a bucket brigade, a chance to knock down targets with the hose and last but certainly not least an invitation to get completely drenched under the welcoming cool spray from the truck. Our kids learned about team work, trying to be the first to get their bucket filled. They experienced the strength and precision needed to control the powerful tools used to keep us safe. And they got to bask in the pure joy of running around in an endless (ok maybe only 10 min) shower of FUN! As kids dried off, gathered their shoes and moved on to the rest of their day – it was all smiles – from both kids and firefighters! KidsTLC is so grateful to all those that give their time to help our kids remember to just be kids!
