What is PS-MAPP? PS-MAPP (Partnering for Safety and Permanence -Model Approach to Partnership in Parenting) is a 30-hour curriculum developed by the Child Welfare Institute and required by the state of Kansas for all prospective parents interested in fostering or adopting children in the state's custody. The group is co-led by a social worker and a foster or adoptive parent and meets three hours per week for ten weeks at a designated time and place. These sessions focus on the history and characteristics of abused or neglected children commonly in the child welfare system. Techniques and resources for successfully parenting these children are discussed. The information and materials provided help families to identify their strengths and needs and determine if fostering or adopting is right for them. The sponsoring agency also has an opportunity during the sessions to get to know the family and begin to establish the partnership that is crucial in caring for these children. TLC offers PS-MAPP several times a year at no cost and will work with you to meet the training requirements. If you are interested in attending the classes or exploring other training options, please contact our Director of Resource Family Services, Teresa Johnston, by phone at 913-324-3611 or by e-mail at tjohnston@kidstlc.org. Classes start July 17th. Contact Teresa for more information and to register.
