TLC's sixth annual Hoops for Kids basketball event was a record breaker in all categories!
The overriding theme was “Kids and families..helping kids and families” FREE isn't a word generally associated with a major fundraiser, but thanks to Presenting Sponsor Olathe Medical Center and other generous sponsors, June 21 was a low cost/no cost day for kids and their families as they enjoyed a variety of activities from early morning until late night at MidAmerica Nazarene University. 3-on-3 Youth Tournament —expanded from 29 teams in 2007 to 54 teams in 2008. Over 200 boys and girls, grades 2-9, played hard, honed their basketball skills, practiced good sportsmanship and took home a medal. New sponsor: Davis, Bethune & Jones, LLC .
Mini-Carnival —Kids of all ages enjoyed the Candy Walk, Fast Pitch, Ring Toss and other games as they filled their bags with pop, candy, stickers and other prizes. Other highlights included Baby Jay's appearance, donated by the K.U. Athletic Department, and balloon art by Balloon Gardens. Border Battles —Graduated seniors, male and female, from area schools provided All-Star entertainment on the court. Just as importantly, they took time from their college preparation activities to participate in a benefit for fellow teens. We'll be watching their progress—on and off the court! Returning sponsor: Shaner Appraisals . Autographs —Kids had a chance to get up close and personal with the Main Event players as they handed them Hoops T-shirts and other items to autograph. At the end of the line they found a bonus— Dustin Colquitt , Chiefs punter and TLC spokesperson, added his signature to their collection.
Main Event —What a game!! Tyronn Lue, Billy Thomas and JaRon Rush led an impressive group of basketball players eager to showcase their skills as they put on a dunking, 3-point shooting, board crashing clinic. But as entertaining as the basketball was, their commitment to TLC and Hoops for Kids doesn't stop there. Players serve on the Hoops committee, gather game-worn items for our auction and come to TLC to visit with the kids. These are basketball's finest—on and off the court. Returning Sponsor: Farmers Insurance . Auction— Name your price range, name your sport—there was something for everyone in this sports memorabilia auction! Game-worn items included a Paul Pierce jersey, Tyronn Lue shoe and Billy Thomas jersey. And speaking of “game-worn”—the Main Event players literally took the jerseys off their backs to give to the highest bidders. | |||||||
