President's Update...

ONE HOUR A MONTH

Dear Friends,

The Kauffman Foundation has sponsored a teen survey since 1984. This survey is a highly reliable source of information to understand current and emerging trends in the Kansas City Metropolitan area youth. The Olathe and Blue Valley School Districts have participated in these surveys for many years.

As in many circumstances there is both good news and bad news. Some good news is that tobacco and marijuana use among 8th and 10th graders has decreased. The bad news is both of these behaviors have increased among 12th graders.

Obviously there is a wealth of information in this survey that space does not allow me to share with you. But one statistic that has really startled me is that the majority of youth in our community report that they do not feel that adults are investing in their lives.

This has caused me to think about the potential impact that could occur if each person on this mailing list would invest one hour a month with a teen. It is a challenging thought for me, how about you?

Warmest personal regards,

Bob Drummond, Ed.D

President and CEO

P.S. Remember the TLC Groundbreaking Ceremony on June 1st at 11:00 a.m. on our campus.

CHANGING LIVES...

May is National Foster Care Month

May is National Foster Care Month and TLC has joined with other local child placing agencies to recognize and honor the foster families that open their hearts and homes to the many children of the community in need.  Last Monday evening, the In Your Honor event was held at The Ball Conference Center with Congressman Dennis Moore as the guest speaker. Congressman Moore was joined by many local elected and city officials, including Olathe Mayor Pro Tem Jim Randall, in showing their support and appreciation for area foster families.

The event was filled with proclamations from the City of Olathe and Governor Kathleen Sebelius.  It also included desserts, door prizes, and sincere gratitude for each and every family that provides a safe and loving temporary home for youth who have been removed from their home. After the program, Congressman Moore visited with those in attendance and took the opportunity to express his thanks individually.

TLC is very appreciative of their foster families for the work that they do with no thought of recognition or thanks. They have touched hundreds of lives in positive and loving ways. Unfortunately, there is a much larger demand for foster families than what is currently available. While our families do a great job of taking in as many kids as possible, they simply can't take in all the kids in need. TLC has to say “No” to hundreds of requests for placement each year for kids in need of a local foster family.

If you are interested in learning more about this wonderful service to others, or know someone who is, please contact TLC's recruiter, Matt Humphrey at 913-324-3624 or matth@kidstlc.org.

SHINING STARS...

Recognizing Special Volunteers

A special volunteer has joined the TLC family of supporters. Nancy MacCready recently moved to the Kansas City area from Chicago with her husband, Paul. Shortly after arriving she decided to get involved in the community and meet some new people. Nancy joined the Johnson County Young Matrons and learned about TLC. After visiting TLC's campus, Nancy generously offered her time and support, should we need it…and we did! In the past few months, Nancy has been out to TLC several times to help out in the office and answer the phones. She has volunteered in the shelters spending time with the youth and has helped with TLC's Hoops for Kids event, as well as joining the United for Kids Gala committee. And these are just a few of her volunteer activities! Nancy has jumped in head first to support TLC and we could not be more grateful!

Thanks for all you do Nancy!!!

Dine Out For Kids: A new Campaign for TLC Kicks Off

Many people are amazed when they discover the number of children and youth in our community who are in need of TLC's services. In 2004, TLC served approximately 5,300 children. That number jumped to nearly 8,000 in 2005 and we expect the numbers to keep growing in 2006. In an attempt to accommodate the growing number of children who need our services, TLC is kicking off a new fundraising campaign. “Dine Out for Kids” is a unique fund raising endeavor that asks local restaurants to pick one day either annually or quarterly that they would be willing to donate 20% of their sales for the entire day to TLC. This provides area restaurants a great opportunity to work together and give back to the community in a collective effort. A few area restaurants that have already agreed to become part of the “Dine Out for Kids” campaign including Zio's Italian Kitchen located at 11981 S. Strang Line Road in Olathe and the Great Mall and Santa Fe location Applebee's! Zio's has generously offered to do a benefit for TLC once a month for the rest of the year! The next Zio's “Dine Out for Kids” date is June 5th . The Applebee's located on Santa Fe in Olathe has chosen 4 dates to support TLC: June 13th , July 13th , August 9th and September 14th . The Great Mall Applebee's “Dine Out for Kids” date will be announced soon! Please support TLC by dining at participating “Dine Out for Kids” restaurants.

Contact Morgan Conley at 913-764-2887 or mailto:mconley@kidstlc.orgif you would like to become a member of TLC's “Dine Out for Kids” campaign.
