I recall with
great fondness the warm summer nights of my youth. These evenings
were full of baseball games, trips to the local Dairy Queen, and
trying to convince my mother that I was old enough to stay out well
after dark. What a contrast this is to the hundreds of youth who
will be sleeping on the “streets of Johnson County ” tonight.
Each night our
TLC SUV will visit the parks, malls, theaters, coffee shops and
other places that youth hang out. We will be reaching out to the
“street kids” of Johnson County. We will distribute food, drinks,
literature, and most of all of hope to these high risk youth.
Our Street
Outreach Program is a one of a kind service for youth in Eastern
Kansas . I can't help but to wish that these youth would have the
opportunity to play baseball and visit the Dairy Queen as I did.
However, with your ongoing support we are helping dozens of youth
each week to find hope in what appears to be overwhelming
circumstances.
Warmest personal
regards,

Bob Drummond,

President and
CEO

CHANGING LIVES...
Two Events combine Sports, Fun and Giving to raise money for
TLC...
Hoops for Kids: NOTHIN' BUT NET!!
TLC's 4th annual
Hoops for Kids basketball event on June 24th was a winner in both
money raised and community participation!
Presenting
Sponsor Olathe Medical Center and Main Event Sponsor YRC Worldwide
headlined a group of 27 businesses that generously gave their
financial or in-kind support. Over $35,000 was raised to benefit
TLC's Street Outreach Services (SOS) program which served nearly
4,000 homeless and at-risk youth in 2005.
Sponsorships
made it possible to offer FREE activities during the day and
evening. These included, admission to the premier basketball
exhibition, spectator admission for the 3-on-3 Youth Tournament,
player autographs, Gator Rivers' mini-clinic and the
mini-carnival—all FREE!
This year's
youth tournament tripled in size to 30 teams with names like Swish,
Home Team and Zoom. Over 250 youth and parents filled the Cook
Center and College Church to join in the fun. Every participant was
awarded a trophy or medal. Many teams extended the fun by joining
the mini-clinic and carnival activities.
Fourteen area
post-college athletes put on quite a basketball extravaganza for the
fans! There was lots of movement and many fancy plays and slam
dunks. Before the game, players autographed T-shirts, programs and
balls for every person in line; after the game, they visited with
fans and had their picture taken with their jersey winners. It was
basketball at its finest—on and off the court.

Silent
Auction Items Still Available... A silent auction
of sports memorabilia and sports-related items rounded out the
evening. There were many unique pieces, some of them remaining. If
you are interested in knowing what items are left (e.g., game-worn
shoes from Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrenz, Tyronn Lue and Billy Thomas),
autographed lithographs, etc., e-mail Donetta Shaner at donetta@kc.rr.com
Honoring a
Legend: Bill Snyder supports TLC
TLC community volunteers Rob
Boyer, Ed O'Malley, Stephanie Sharp and Brent McCune put together a
special event for TLC. On June 21st fans of K-state and
supporters of TLC gathered at the 810 Zone in Leawood for breakfast
to honor one of the legends of college football and raise money for
children in need.
The morning included a delicious breakfast buffet, a
silent auction, and live auction. Following, Bill Snyder made
an inspiring speech about the need to reach out and help children in
need. He urged community members to get involved in local
charities in order to make a difference in the life of a
child.
Two valuable silent auction items from the event
will be auctioned off on the radio. Be sure and listen to
Sports Radio 810 this week to have a chance to bid on a trip to San
Diego to see the Chiefs play, as well as the original piece of
legislation naming the Manhattan highway after Bill Snyder signed by
Bill himself!
Many thanks go to Rob, Coach Snyder, Pepsi, The 810
Zone, and 810 Sports Radio for sponsoring this great
event!
