Friends,
There have been
many changes to the TLC campus in recent days and more to come. One
of the most recent changes is having the privilege of several
dedicated volunteers do an “extreme makeover” of our Emergency
Shelter. The “makeover” will completely renovate our shelter, inside
and out!
And speaking of an “extreme makeover” TLC had the privilege
of having our lives changed by a young woman who recently stayed at
TLC's Emergency Shelter. This young lady was removed from her home
because she was a victim of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse.
She came to the shelter after being placed in police protective
custody. After staying at the shelter around sixty days, she went
into foster care.
She often talked with staff about her desire to go to college
and always eagerly attended school. After going into foster care,
she continued to attend school and applied to college. This past
month TLC staff was informed that this young lady was seeing her
dream come true. She was accepted into Kansas State University!
TLC is thrilled
to have a fully remodeled shelter to be able to help these troubled
youth to overcome their past and reinvent their future. We look
forward to being able to help many more youth in the “home like”
environment our remodeled shelter! Thank you for your continued
support of our efforts to fulfill the dreams of thousands of
children and youth!

Emergency Shelter gets a makeover….
TLC is excited
to announce that our "Extreme Home Makeover" has been
completed! Staff and youth moved out of our Emergency Shelter
home for nearly two weeks while volunteers worked diligently
replacing floors, light fixtures and vents as well as painting and
bringing in new furniture! The home truly received a complete
makeover. When the staff and youth returned to the home on
Wednesday they were overwhelmed with hope and joy!
All of
this was made possible thanks to a generous grant received from
Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church as well as the support of Mark and
Susan Brooks, Shirley Allenbrand of Ad Astra and the many volunteers
who helped make it all happen. Mark and Susan, members of
Rolling Hills, volunteered their time and efforts to spearhead the
construction portion of the project. Shirley Allenbrand and
her co-worker Kristy Cooper took on all the decorating and
furniture. They also raised additional funds to cover the extra
expenses of the project. The project will be completed in mid
July when the home will be recieving a brand new kitchen.
A
special thanks goes out to Burns & McDonnell who has offered to
paint the outside and brighten up the home's landscaping!
TLC
cannot express enough thanks for what all these kind individuals and
contractors have done for our Emergency Shelter. We would also
like to thank Mid America Nazarene University for their kindness in
letting the youth and staff stay in their dorm facilities for the
two weeks during construction. It was a neat opportunity for
the kids to see what "dorm-life" would be like.
TLC's
Emergency Shelter is a co-ed facility that provides homeless, abused
and neglected youth ages 11-18 with temporary housing. The program
offers safety, structure and the opportunity for positive growth and
development through role modeling, education and
self-awareness. It has an 11-bed capacity and a family style
living area.
The new
makeover that has been given to TLC's Emergency
Shelter
has been
such a blessing. It will make the time the
youth
spend there feel more like home!
SHINING STARS...
Recognizing Special
Volunteers
In the spring of
2006 Angela Parks contacted TLC and asked if we would like to be
their charity partner for the Great Stories Book Club. This
program allows the library to provide books to TLC for free of
charge. The books focus on issues that many of our teens face,
ranging from drugs and peer pressure to teen pregnancy. Once a month
TLC's clients go to the library for a book discussion led by library
staff.
For just over a
year now, TLC has been participating in this program and it has been
a huge success! This is a program that is so beneficial to TLC
teens. Not only does book club help to teach kids the value of
reading and education, but it improves their reading skills and also
helps to address difficult issues that many TLC clients face.
Jessica Luth, TLC Residential Activities Coordinator, says, “The
kids love book club because the content of the books are teen
related and they can identify with many issues in the book. And as
an extra bonus, book club gives kids the opportunity to spend time
together and eat pizza provided by the library!”
Thank
you to the Olathe Public Library for providing this
valuable opportunity for TLC!
Drs. Hannah and Oltjen support
TLC...
Dr. Joe
Hannah and Dr. Jay Oltjen, Doctors of Orthodontics, held a patient
appreciation day at Worlds of Fun on June 8, 2007. Patients from all
of their office locations in Olathe, Lenexa, Atchison, Gardner,
Emporia and Overland Park were invited for a day of fun at Worlds of
Fun and treated to a BBQ dinner at the park that evening. Dr. Hannah
and Dr. Oltjen pledged to donate $1 per person to charity for all
1,600 patients and family members in attendance. They split the
donation between TLC for Children and Families and Camps For
Kids. TLC would like to thank Drs. Hannah and Oltjen for all
their support!

TLC's Hoops for Kids was a huge
success...

Following the
first Hoops for Kids fundraiser, one of the committee members
predicted that this event would be “over the top” in a few short
years. We feel that we reached that expectation this year—our fifth
annual event!
•
Twenty-eight businesses, led by Olathe Medical
Center and Farmers Insurance,
stepped forward with financial and/or in-kind support. This
allowed us to raise over $46,000—all from a FREE quality
family event open to
everyone!
•
Other businesses and individuals donated or purchased auction
items, registered 3-on-3 teams, bought concessions and
souvenirs and volunteered their time.
On June 9, the
Cook Center at MidAmerica Nazarene University was filled with
activity:
•
Over 125 boys and girls, representing 28 teams, participated
in the 3-on-3 Youth
Tournament.
•
Dozens of the younger set enjoyed games, an inflatable
obstacle course and posing with K.U. Mascot Baby Jay during a
fun-filled
mini-carnival.
•
New this year—H.S. All-Star Athletes (both boys and girls)
from Kansas and Missouri faced off in entertaining and
competitive games.
•
The Main Event featured 18 past and current professional
basketball players who showcased their dribbling, dunking and
shooting skills for enthusiastic fans. They also signed
autographs and had their pictures taken with jersey winners.
• A
silent auction, including sports memorabilia and golf
packages, rounded out the event.
Thanks
to all who participated in any way to make this a successful
event!
