President's Update...

Dear good friends,

During the past few months the TLC campus has changed quite a bit. Construction on our Mabee Family Center and New Residential Treatment facility has begun. These are exciting times in TLC history.

With the addition of the New Residential Treatment facility TLC will serve youth in need of residential mental health treatment who find it difficult to obtain this service and participate in family therapy within Johnson County due to an inadequate number of beds and service providers. The new facility will also help bridge the transitional housing gap that exists for Johnson County and Jackson County youth who are living on the streets and considered homeless as well as those youth who age out of the systems.

I am grateful for the vision, determination, and sacrifice of those community volunteers who founded TLC 35 years ago. Now, it's our turn to make a difference for the next generation of children and youth who are depending on us. With your support, we can bring our children home and offer a bright future for their tomorrows.

Warmest Personal Regards,

Bob Drummond, Ed.D

President and CEO

Changing Lives...

TLC's Residential Program

TLC's Residential Treatment program provides personal development and intensive therapeutic treatment.  Our structured homes deliver effective individualized care for youth.  TLC's residential staff have been busy preparing for the implementation of it's Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTF) which will take place sometime over the next several months.

PRTF will provide comprehensive mental health treatment to children and adolescents who, due to mental illness or severe emotional disturbance, are in need of quality active treatment that can only be provided in a psychiatric residential treatment facility.

Clinical and residential staff at TLC will work closely with medical professionals to design a short term, intense, focused treatment program to promote a successful return by the child or adolescent in the community.

Our medical, clinical and residential staff will work actively with the family, other agencies, and the community to offer strengths-based, culturally competent, medically appropriate treatment designed to meet the individual needs of our clients.  This change will be positive for both TLC and the youth that we serve.

The hard work and dedication of the residential staff pays off each time they are able to see positive changes in a resident.  Take for example "Sara" who is nine months sober and attending her NA classes along with school and working. She has graduated from TLC's program and in a few weeks will be going to stay with a relative.

Sara was placed in custody due to noncompliance with the rules of her Intensive Supervision Probation. She had a history of using illegal substances and was putting herself and her family at risk because she refused to obey rules. Sara had failed to learn from past mistakes and consequences.  She talked to TLC staff about her mother being addicted to pain medication due to an accident.  Sara chose to use drugs and make poor decisions and has struggled greatly with her addiction.

While at TLC Sara was able to stay clean and sober, attain a job and maintain her grades in high school.  Not only has she recieved hope for a brighter future, but she has been given the tools to achieve the things she wants out of life.  It is the goal of TLC's residential program to give every child this same chance.

SHINING STARS...

Recognizing Special Volunteers

Dealers in Hope

Napoleon Bonaparte said, “A leader is a dealer in hope”.  That could not be more true of two special TLC volunteers.  Harlan Parker and Dan Stalp are both leaders within their industries, as well as communities, and are perfect examples of “dealers in hope”.  For the past four years Harlan and Dan have been dealing out hope to the thousands of children served by TLC by co-chairing TLC's For the Children Annual Fund Campaign.  Leading a team of over 60 community volunteers who have collectively raised over $300,000 For TLC!

Harlan is a State Farm agent, as well as a husband and father of one son. He enjoys both golfing and skiing.  Aside from giving hope to TLC kids, Harlan is also very active in his church and serves on the Olathe School District Board of Directors.  Dan is currently the Vice President of Brooks Associates and volunteers countless hours to many causes including the Volunteer Center of Johnson County and the United Way. Dan is also a husband and father to four active children!

These two special volunteers serve above and beyond. For them there is no task too small when it comes to helping kids! As the 2007 Annual Fund Campaign kick off is just around the corner, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Harlan and Dan for being true leaders…and dealers in hope!
