Dear Friends,
Wow! We sure
have had a run of hot weather and in some cases we have set new
records! Well, TLC is working on another record year. Undoubtedly,
we will serve more children, youth and families than ever before.
Allow me to tell you briefly about one of our former clients who
recently consented to an interview with the Sun newspaper. Kyle
Limke was a senior at Shawnee Mission North High School after moving
to Johnson County from Oklahoma. He soon clashed with the older
married couple he was living with and found himself homeless and
living in his 1988 Ford Escort. He lived in his car from October
through April. The January nights got really cold and sometimes he
would go without food and a shower for days.
After speaking
with a school counselor in April he learned about TLC. Kyle soon
moved to TLC where he received assistance and successfully graduated
high school. Kyle then joined the army, got married, and left for
Germany a few weeks ago.
In closing, I
want you to read a few things that Kyle said to the reporter: “TLC
was nice and structured. It kept me busy; gave me something to do
during the day. They gave me a ride to and from school, food,
shelter; sort of a family-type structure. Once I get done with the
Army and come back to the States, I'd like to stop by and help them
out… I owe them so much.”
Kyle's story is
one of 8,000 we will hear this year. And with your help our goal is
to provide hope and opportunity to each one! Thank you for your
ongoing support.
Warmest personal
regards,

Bob Drummond,

President and
CEO

CHANGING LIVES...
The JIS program at
TLC provides hope for youth
The Juvenile Intervention
Services program (JIS) encompasses three areas: Juvenile Offender
Case Management, Truancy Case Management, and Family Case
Management.
So far in 2006, Juvenile Offender Case
Management has served 80 youth and families. This program strives to
prevent youth from re-offending. Of the youth who successfully
completed the program, 94% had no additional juvenile offender
charges after a 12-month follow-up.
The
Family Case Management program has served 30 families in 2006. This
program aims to reduce family conflict and violence and prevent the
removal of children from their homes.
The Truancy Case Management has already served 61 youth and
families. In 2004 they became part of a pilot project with Indian
Trail, Oregon Trail Junior High, and Central Elementary to provide
education and preventative services.
These programs have helped many youth to find the support
they need as well as access community services.
Seth's Story...
Seth
is a 17 year old male who was referred to the Juvenile Offender Case
Management program for possession of marijuana. Seth's parents were
divorced and his mother was in the Franklin County Jail after she
was arrested for selling methamphetamines. Seth's father was also an
alcoholic who would frequently call Seth for rides when he was
intoxicated. At the beginning of the program Seth was reluctant to
make any changes and actually tested positive for marijuana when he
took his first urine analysis. After a few weeks of talking with
Seth he admitted that his parents' situations stressed him out and
that he needed to make some changes.
Seth moved in with his grandmother, began a new job, and
successfully completed summer school. Seth's mother was
released from jail and Seth began to try and influence her life in a
positive way. He drastically improved his attitude toward his
situation and has not tested positive on any more urine analyses.
JIS has helped many children like Seth deal with
issues of truancy, family conflict, and juvenile offenses. The case
workers and staff at JIS are thankful that during these hard times
they can be a source of guidance and hope for the youth that they
serve.
Shaping the Future through Estate Planning...
You Don't Have to be Wealthy
You might think
you have to be wealthy to make a major gift to TLC. Not true: Almost
anyone can arrange to make a major impact on TLC through a planned
gift.
There are many
ways to make a planned gift, but the most common is through one's
will. You can set aside a certain dollar amount or a percentage of
your assets. You might want to donate whatever is left after you
provide for loved ones.
You can make
lifetime gifts of property such as real estate, stock or a valuable
collection. Some people make a planned gift through life insurance.
Others choose to name TLC as the beneficiary of their retirement
plan.
No, you do not
have to be wealthy. Call us at 913-764-2887 for additional
information on how you can make a real difference in the lives of
children and youth for generations to come.
TLC awarded $200,000 in Kansas Tax Credits
TLC for
Children and Families is among 22 nonprofit organizations receiving
community service tax credits from the Kansas Department of
Commerce. TLC has been awarded $200,000 in Kansas tax credits toward
our $9.6 million “Bringing Our Children Home” capital campaign.
As a
result of the award, TLC is able to offer individuals and
businesses a 50 percent tax credit from the State of Kansas
for cash gifts to its capital campaign. TLC is making
Kansas Tax Credits available to donors who make first time or
enhanced contributions or commitments to the "Bringing our Children
Home" capital campaign between July 1, 2006 and December 31,
2007.
The
benefit of the tax credit program is that donors will receive 50
percent of the amount of the donation back from the State of Kansas
in the form of a tax credit or a refund on their Kansas income tax
liability.
TLC's
capital campaign will enable TLC to triple its capacity to provide
residential services to adolescents, going from 30 beds to 92 beds
for youth in need of out of home placement. The construction, when
completed, will provide a new 24,000 square foot residential center
and transitional living apartments, renovations to its existing boys
and girls shelters, and expansion of its Mabee Family Center . To
date, over $8.4 million has been raised for the $9.6 million
project.
For more
information about how you can reserve Kansas Tax Credits to support
TLC's capital campaign, please call Tim Keeton at (913) 764-2887.
