President's Update...

Dear Friends,

Wow! We sure have had a run of hot weather and in some cases we have set new records! Well, TLC is working on another record year. Undoubtedly, we will serve more children, youth and families than ever before. Allow me to tell you briefly about one of our former clients who recently consented to an interview with the Sun newspaper. Kyle Limke was a senior at Shawnee Mission North High School after moving to Johnson County from Oklahoma. He soon clashed with the older married couple he was living with and found himself homeless and living in his 1988 Ford Escort. He lived in his car from October through April. The January nights got really cold and sometimes he would go without food and a shower for days.

After speaking with a school counselor in April he learned about TLC. Kyle soon moved to TLC where he received assistance and successfully graduated high school. Kyle then joined the army, got married, and left for Germany a few weeks ago.

In closing, I want you to read a few things that Kyle said to the reporter: “TLC was nice and structured. It kept me busy; gave me something to do during the day. They gave me a ride to and from school, food, shelter; sort of a family-type structure. Once I get done with the Army and come back to the States, I'd like to stop by and help them out… I owe them so much.”

Kyle's story is one of 8,000 we will hear this year. And with your help our goal is to provide hope and opportunity to each one! Thank you for your ongoing support.

Warmest personal regards,

Bob Drummond, Ed.D

President and CEO

CHANGING LIVES...

The JIS program at TLC provides hope for youth

The Juvenile Intervention Services program (JIS) encompasses three areas: Juvenile Offender Case Management, Truancy Case Management, and Family Case Management.

So far in 2006, Juvenile Offender Case Management has served 80 youth and families. This program strives to prevent youth from re-offending. Of the youth who successfully completed the program, 94% had no additional juvenile offender charges after a 12-month follow-up.

The Family Case Management program has served 30 families in 2006. This program aims to reduce family conflict and violence and prevent the removal of children from their homes.

The Truancy Case Management has already served 61 youth and families. In 2004 they became part of a pilot project with Indian Trail, Oregon Trail Junior High, and Central Elementary to provide education and preventative services.

These programs have helped many youth to find the support they need as well as access community services.

Seth's Story...

Seth is a 17 year old male who was referred to the Juvenile Offender Case Management program for possession of marijuana. Seth's parents were divorced and his mother was in the Franklin County Jail after she was arrested for selling methamphetamines. Seth's father was also an alcoholic who would frequently call Seth for rides when he was intoxicated. At the beginning of the program Seth was reluctant to make any changes and actually tested positive for marijuana when he took his first urine analysis. After a few weeks of talking with Seth he admitted that his parents' situations stressed him out and that he needed to make some changes.

Seth moved in with his grandmother, began a new job, and successfully completed summer school.  Seth's mother was released from jail and Seth began to try and influence her life in a positive way. He drastically improved his attitude toward his situation and has not tested positive on any more urine analyses.

JIS has helped many children like Seth deal with issues of truancy, family conflict, and juvenile offenses. The case workers and staff at JIS are thankful that during these hard times they can be a source of guidance and hope for the youth that they serve.

Shaping the Future through Estate Planning...

You Don't Have to be Wealthy

You might think you have to be wealthy to make a major gift to TLC. Not true: Almost anyone can arrange to make a major impact on TLC through a planned gift.

There are many ways to make a planned gift, but the most common is through one's will. You can set aside a certain dollar amount or a percentage of your assets. You might want to donate whatever is left after you provide for loved ones.

You can make lifetime gifts of property such as real estate, stock or a valuable collection. Some people make a planned gift through life insurance. Others choose to name TLC as the beneficiary of their retirement plan.

No, you do not have to be wealthy. Call us at 913-764-2887 for additional information on how you can make a real difference in the lives of children and youth for generations to come.

TLC awarded $200,000 in Kansas Tax Credits

TLC for Children and Families is among 22 nonprofit organizations receiving community service tax credits from the Kansas Department of Commerce. TLC has been awarded $200,000 in Kansas tax credits toward our $9.6 million “Bringing Our Children Home” capital campaign.

As a result of the award, TLC is able to offer individuals and businesses a 50 percent tax credit from the State of Kansas for cash gifts to its capital campaign.  TLC is making Kansas Tax Credits available to donors who make first time or enhanced contributions or commitments to the "Bringing our Children Home" capital campaign between July 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007.

The benefit of the tax credit program is that donors will receive 50 percent of the amount of the donation back from the State of Kansas in the form of a tax credit or a refund on their Kansas income tax liability.

TLC's capital campaign will enable TLC to triple its capacity to provide residential services to adolescents, going from 30 beds to 92 beds for youth in need of out of home placement. The construction, when completed, will provide a new 24,000 square foot residential center and transitional living apartments, renovations to its existing boys and girls shelters, and expansion of its Mabee Family Center . To date, over $8.4 million has been raised for the $9.6 million project.

For more information about how you can reserve Kansas Tax Credits to support TLC's capital campaign, please call Tim Keeton at (913) 764-2887.

SHINING STARS...

Recognizing Special Volunteers

When Tyller Bohlken decided that she wanted to obtain the Bronze Award through her Girl Scout troop, she knew it would be a long process. As the final step toward her Bronze Award, Tyller had to complete a service project. When she was told about the epidemic of homeless teenagers in Johnson County, she was immediately moved to help and she chose TLC for her project. She coordinated a six-week drive to collect travel-size personal hygiene items and she asked Garmin to donate small bags to put the items in that would be easy for teens to carry. The result was nothing short of amazing! Tyller was able to donate two bags full of personal hygiene care packages that teens on the street are in desperate need of, as well as many other items. TLC's Street Outreach Services (SOS) staff will be able to drive around our streets and pass these bags out to teens that need help. We are so grateful to Tyller for her hard work, passion and dedication to the children served by TLC. Her bronze award is well deserved!

Special Event Spotlights...

Women Fore TLC: A good time was had by all!

Hot days seem to accompany the Women Fore TLC event but sizzling temperatures didn't spoil the fun! Over 125 guests enjoyed the pre-event party at Falcon Ridge on Sunday, July 16. Food and drink were plentiful as everyone enjoyed the music of the Greg Richter Duo, bid on auction items and visited with fellow TLC supporters. Pre-event Party Sponsor HealthRidge Fitness Center provided guest favors and a spa basket for the auction in addition to their contribution as an underwriter for the evening. Dina Michaels from KUDL 98.1 was a delight and worked tirelessly to get the very best prices for our live auction items. Over $10,000 was raised on the auction alone. Several braved the temperatures to participate in putting and chipping contests.

A slight breeze, iced towels and strong spirits helped the 54 golfers enjoy the clinic and tournaments the following day. Four teams took advantage of the teaching skills of Mark Nigro, Diane Richey and Liz Smart as they learned the secrets of driving, putting and chipping, then put those lessons to work during a nine-hole tournament. Ten teams participated in an 18-hole scramble tournament and turned in impressive scores. Golf was followed by lunch, a casual fashion show, program and awards. Major sponsorship support was provided by Stillwater National Bank, Dimples Golf, James S. Craig, D.D.S.P.A. and KUDL.

TLC President and CEO Bob Drummond was on hand at both activities to remind supporters that while they are enjoying themselves, they are providing essential support for the children and youth that TLC sees each day—8,000 in 2005. The $25,000 raised at the Women Fore TLC event will help ensure that TLC can continue to serve those at-risk in our community.

Luncheon Sponsor Dr. James Craig, Pre-Event Co-chair Valerie Craig, Hole Sponsors, Kenny Hobbs and Pre-Event Co-chair Mary Hobbs.

Clinic Sponsor and Stillwater National Bank representatives Kristen Schilling and Alex Goodpaster and Shirley Allenbrand from Ad Astra Development, Team Sponsor.

TLC's Second Annual Wine Tasting Benefit

Many thanks go out to Debbie Swinney, Kathleen Huttmann, Drew Dieterich and Terri Gravley for planning an elegant evening of wine tasting for TLC.  The event raised $15,000 through ticket sales as well as a silent and live auction.  Guests were entertained by the music of the Doubleday Jazz Quartet, tasted a variety of wines provided by Brown Bag Liquor of Olathe and enjoyed delicious food/drink courtesy of Debbie as well as Carrabba's and Pepsi.

TLC supporters bid on a "dream cruise" during the live auction

HELP THE ENVIRONMENT AND KIDS AT THE SAME TIME!

When the ink cartridge needs to be replaced in your home or office printer, remember that you can mail or bring the empty cartridge to TLC's office. TLC will collect all of the ink cartridges and ship them to InkJetCollect. InkJetCollect will mail a check to TLC for all of the empty ink cartridges we collect. It is so simple and the more ink cartridges we collect, the more money we can raise to help kids in our community!

Easy ways to participate include:

•  Collecting ink cartridges for your entire office to give to TLC

•  Coordinate a neighborhood effort to donate all empty ink cartridges to TLC

•  Collect empty ink cartridges through your church or civic group to donate to TLC
