President's Update...

TLC, in keeping faith with the spirit of our founders, has decided to once again accept the challenge of caring for the growing number of children, youth and families in our community. Bringing Our Children Home will be the largest effort in the history of TLC and will address the following needs in our community:

•  Shortage of foster care homes: Over 2/3 of Johnson County children needing foster care cannot be placed within the county due to a shortage of foster care homes.

•  Shortage of residential treatment services for children: Over 60% of the youth in Johnson County who need residential mental health treatment cannot obtain this service within the county due to an inadequate number of beds and service providers.

•  Shortage of transitional living for homeless and runaway youth: Recent data gathered through TLC's Street Outreach Services program estimates that nearly 1,000 youth in Johnson County , KS and Jackson County, MO are on the streets and are considered homeless.

We have a lot to be proud of in Johnson County , but when it comes to children and youth who are experiencing abuse, neglect, and family disruption, there is much to be done. Join us in this new adventure as we work to make a difference in the lives of the next generation of Johnson County children.

CHANGING LIVES...

TLC Announces Capital Campaign

After more than three decades of service to the community, TLC stands poised to implement a master plan that addresses the most pressing needs of children and families in Johnson County . The Bringing Our Children Home capital campaign seeks to raise $8.04 million to address the growing number of children and youth in our community needing intervention and assistance.

The Bringing Our Children Home capital campaign is the largest and most comprehensive campaign in TLC's history. Compelled by the magnitude of the need among the most defenseless and vulnerable in our community, the campaign seeks to accomplish the following objectives:

Construction of a new Residential Treatment Center

  • 25 beds for mental health treatment
  • 22-bed transitional living apartments
  • Recreation and commons area

Expansion and renovation of the boys' and girls' Residential Treatment Centers

  • 15 additional beds
  • Campus health center
  • Therapy and counseling offices

Expansion of the Mabee Family Center

  • Expanded training facility
  • Classroom technology
  • Additional office space

New Dining Hall and Commons Area

  • Centralized kitchen
  • Campus dining area
  • Recreation and commons area

Establishment of a strong endowment fund

•  Provide stable source of funding for campus operations, programming, and equipment.

Ours is a generous and caring community. We clearly have the means and motivation to “bring our children home”. Together, we can help give these children hope and the best possible chance at a better life.

Our kids are depending on us. Will YOU help us in bringing our children home?

SHINING STARS...

Recognizing Special Volunteers

Gary and Penny Turner have been volunteering at TLC for over a year. They are members of an organization called Mo-Kan Pet Partners. This organization primarily focuses on animal-assisted therapy, that is, using dogs as therapy for children in crisis. Once a month Gary and Penny bring their two Bernese Mountain dogs out to TLC's shelter.  These dogs are certified through the Delta Society as therapy dogs. These visits give the youth in TLC's shelter the opportunity to pet, brush and play with the animals. Pet therapy also gives the kids a sense of companionship and comfort. As Gary holds one of the 95 lb. dogs on his lap, he says, "The dogs give the kids a feeling of hope that things will get better”. He also notes that many of the TLC residents have their own pets at home that they miss very much and being around other pets helps to fill that void. While pet therapy offers a diversion from the everyday lives of the children, it is a very rewarding experience for the Turners as well. They have been married for 31 years and have had no children of their own. Gary says that using pet therapy to help TLC's youth is a great way for them to give back to the community and have a positive impact on children in crisis. Gary feels that one of the biggest things missing in the lives of the children in TLC's care is a feeling of unconditional love. Pets are able to offer them a sense of unconditional love that they would otherwise be lacking.
