Monthly E-Newsletter

President's Update...

As I reviewed the 2005 statistics last month I was stunned! I knew we were busy last year serving more children, youth and families than ever before, but not to the extent we eventually did. Even though there is some duplication in these numbers, we served over 7,900 kids. In 2004 we served 5,300.

Unfortunately, we know that there are hundreds more children and youth that are not being served in our area. With this knowledge, our Board launched the “Bringing Our Children Home” Capital Campaign in January of 2005.

Thus far, the campaign has been amazingly successful with over $6.5 million raised with a $8.1 million goal. This success has allowed us to move our construction start date from early 2007 to June 1st of 2006! Yes, we still have $1.7 million to raise, but we are breaking ground for our new facilities in two months.

In closing, there are TWO things I would ask of you. First, if you have not contributed to our capital campaign please contact us. Gifts of all sizes are welcomed as they will be matched by foundation gifts. Secondly, please plan on attending our groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Remember, you can make a difference!

Warmest personal regards,

Bob Drummond, Ed.D

President and CEO

CHANGING LIVES...

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Three children in this country will die today from abuse or neglect, most likely at the hands of someone they know. More than 3 million children are reported abused and neglected each year. In 2005, more than 2,500 reports of suspected abuse were made in Johnson and Wyandotte counties.  (www.srskansas.org).

TLC for Children and Families, Inc . along with seven other Kansas agencies addressing child abuse and neglect, are forming a coalition- Partners for Child Abuse Prevention -that along with an established Missouri coalition will protect local children and direct attention to an issue that, according to studies, costs the nation $258 million each day. The coalition builds bi-state cooperation and further ensures information critical to building a safer Kansas City is shared with community members.

7 STEPS TO PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN

•  Learn the facts about child abuse and understand the risks to your child.

•  Minimize opportunity: Eliminate or reduce one-adult/one-child situations.

•  Talk to your kids: Children often keep abuse a secret.

Talk openly about the importance of personal safety.

•  Safety Alert: Don't expect obvious signs when a child is being sexually abused.

•  Make a plan: Role play with your kids.

•  Act on Suspicions: Don't feel that you have to prove anything.

•  Get involved in your neighborhood, community and child's school.

How to Report Child Abuse

Kansas : 1-800-922-5330

Missouri : 1-800-392-3738

Child Abuse and/or Neglect Knows No State Line, County Line or Income Level.

Shaping the Future through Estate Planning...

Your annual gifts can continue forever

TLC depends on many loyal friends and supporters who make annual gifts in support of the programs and services provided to children and youth in our community. When a benefactor dies, then that support ends.

You can continue your commitment to providing quality services to children and youth beyond your lifetime by including TLC Charities Foundation in your will. With a bequest to the TLC Charities Foundation, you can continue your annual support where the need is greatest to sustain the programs which were important to you during your lifetime.

You can create a permanent legacy. Here is how to accomplish that:

SHINING STARS...

Recognizing Special Volunteers

The new PostNet store celebrated its grand opening in the Southgate Retail Center in Olathe on March 23rd . PostNet specializes in shipping, packaging, internet, printing, copying, passport, private mailboxes, notary and other professional services. Owners Greg and Sue Ann Harris decided to use the opening of their new store as an opportunity to give back to the community. After visiting TLC's campus and interacting with the youth in the shelters, Greg chose TLC as the recipient of PostNet's grand opening fund raiser. PostNet was able to present TLC with a check for $300! We would like to take this opportunity to thank Greg and Sue Ann for their generosity and ask that you support businesses such as PostNet that give back to the community. Stop by and visit their store at 20140 W. 153 rd Street in Olathe. You may also visit their website at www.postnet.com/KS103.

Special Events Spotlight...

2006 "For the Children" Kickoff Celebration

TLC for Children and Families held its yearly “For the Children” Annual Fund kick off luncheon on March 10 th at Carrabba's Italian Grill in Olathe . More than eighty-five friends and supporters attended the celebration. TLC's honorary chairs Congressman Dennis Moore , Olathe Mayor, Mike Copeland and Lenexa Police Chief, Ellen Hanson all spoke of the importance and need for services offered by TLC. Other honorary chairs in attendance included Olathe Police Chief, Janet Thiessen and Johnson County Commissioner, Doug Wood.

Campaign Co-chairs Harlan Parker and Dan Stalp reminded guests that one hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of car you drove, what kind of house you lived in or how much money you had in your bank account, but what will matter is the world may be a little better because you were important in the life of a child. The goal for the 2006 “For the Children” campaign which runs from March 1st through May 31st is $135,000. The campaign's nine captains include Harlan Parker , Dan Stalp , Rob Boyer, Terri Gravley, Kathleen Huttmann, Jim Smith, Debbie Swinney , Charles Warren and Ron Wimmer. Each captain was asked to recruit up to 7 team members. Dan Stalp asked team members to share their fundraising strategies during the luncheon. Debbie Swinney and Terri Gravley are teaming up to host the 2 nd annual Wine Tasting event; Ron Wimmer's team will implement an event that will feature local artists and a wine and cheese reception; Rob Boyer's team is working on an event that will host a special appearance by Bill Snyder. Be sure to check the TLC website at http://www.kidstlc.org/ or watch for invitations to these special events coming soon!

Junk in the Trunk Event supports TLC

The second annual Junk in the Trunk sale will be held Saturday, April 22 nd at MidAmerica Nazarene University. Professor Mark Hamilton's Public Relations class organized the first Junk in the Trunk sale last year and raised funds to

support TLC.  This event gives members of the community the opportunity to bring items they no longer use to MidAmerica's parking lot and sell them to the public, like a garage sale. At the end of the day, each seller donates 10% of their earnings to TLC. This event was so successful last year that the class has decided to make it an annual event to benefit TLC! Stop by MidAmerica Nazarene University on April 22 nd and do some shopping to support TLC! If you are interested in selling or donating your used items, please contact Nate Lawyer at 785-248-5141.
